My son is obsessed with Pokémon. Ever since Jollibee came out with a kiddie meal with free Pokémons a few months ago and I introduced him to the show—1997’s Pokémon season one, Indigo League—he’s hooked. It was just fitting then that on our recent trip to Japan’s Kansai region, we found the perfect lodging for him—a full Pokémon-themed room at MIMARU Hotel in Kyoto’s Kawaramachi Gojo area. It’s a surprise, and we’re just as excited to see the look on his face when he enters the room!

A Disney Adventure Cruise experience doesn’t begin and end at the cruise ship—it’s the perfect opportunity to explore Singapore before and after your sailing. And Singapore is an ideal destination for both—with its compact size, efficient transport system, and attractions, it’s easy to explore even on a short stay. The area around the cruise port itself is interesting enough. In fact, our family maximized our cruise by exploring Singapore just before boarding the Disney Adventure for its maiden voyage and after the cruise at the Changi Airport—one of the best airports in the world for dining, shopping, and attractions.

“Why don’t we visit Disneyland?” My son asked a couple of weeks before our surprise Singapore Disney Adventure Cruise for him.

“How about a Disney Cruise instead?” I replied. His eyes widened, mouth agape, astonished that there is such a thing as a Disney-themed cruise. Still, we held the surprise. My wife and I waited until the very last minute, at the cruise port in Singapore, when his eyes actually gazed upon the Disney Adventure cruise ship in all its massive glory.

From our arrival in Singapore and the ship christening to our accommodation inside the Disney Adventure and all the things we ate and did on the cruise.

For Star Navigator’s shore excursions, Naha is the one I’m most excited about. The first reason is that it has white, sandy, tropical beaches—a place I don’t usually associate with Japan. And second, being part of Okinawa Prefecture, it’s so remotely located it’s actually closer to Taiwan than mainland Japan—a place that most tourists are not easily able to access. Naha is so far; it actually took us more than a day and a half to reach it from Kumamoto.

Kuma-where? I had never heard of Kumamoto prior to our Star Cruises Japan trip. We were now on the fourth day of our cruise, visiting Nagasaki the day before. It turns out, the Kumamoto Prefecture is just a sleep away via a cruise ship. I woke up with our ship docking at Kumamoto’s cruise port, a red lighthouse punctuating a very still and calm Japanese morning.

It took almost two full days to cruise from Keelung City in Taiwan to Japan’s Nagasaki. It was gonna be our first stop for our 6D5N StarDream cruise aboard the Star Navigator. En route, we spent our time exploring the nooks and crannies of the ship, enjoyed the onboard entertainment, and pigged out on its food offerings—both at the free inclusive restaurants and those worth splurging on.

Coming from a Hida Furukawa day tour, we decided to go back to our hotel—Mercure Hida Takayama—to freshen up before continuing to the famous Takayama Old Street. And while BG was busy inside the toilet and Kid A on the TV, I decided to pass the time watching the trains at the back of the hotel—our balcony directly overlooks the tracks.

I quickly forgot about the trains as I parted the drapes, the sun was lighting the town of Takayama and the nearby mountains with its majestic rays. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped the most beautiful sunset we’ve had in Japan yet.

We were on the second half of our Nagoya Tour. Taking a three-hour long bus ride from Takayama, we arrived at Travelodge Nagoya Sakae early in the afternoon. Hauling two medium-sized suitcases, a camera bag, and a toddler with more energy than an Energizer bunny, I quickly plopped down on Travelodge’s comfy sofa while the wife, BG, and our friend, MM, sorted out our reservations.

It was our last full day in Langkawi, our last full day in Malaysia. And our last stop in the country was Tanjung Rhu Resort, and here, for the past two days, we’ve done nothing but eat, relax, and laze around. It was just what we needed after traveling our way through the colorful streets of Penang and Langkawi’s Pantai Cenang.

Tomorrow, we fly to Singapore, the third leg of our Backpacking With A Kid trip. But for now, we savor the setting sun while we laze on a sandy beach almost all to ourselves. It was quite perfect—well, okay, not really. If we have a cold, cold beer in hand, then that would really make it perfect.

An island vacation on an island vacation? That’s just how our stay went after our three-day stay at Pantai Cenang. I mean, yes, we’re already on a vacation—a 35-day tour around Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, to be exact—but on the Langkawi Island leg of our trip, we moved from one of the most popular vacation spots in Malaysia to a more remote one. Well, not really that remote—it’s just a zoom of a speedboat away from Chenang Beach across the Senari Strait—the exclusive Rebak Island Resort; a private island resort in Langkawi Island.

Pantai Cenang is said to be the most visited beach in Malaysia—it is, shall we say, Malaysia’s version of our Boracay. We’ve visited Langkawi a couple of times before, but it is actually the first time we’re staying in the exact vicinity, courtesy of Mercure Langkawi Pantai Cenang. We’re definitely excited since we haven’t fully tried the Pantai Cenang experience before since we’re usually lodged on the more remote parts of the island during the past visits.

But what exactly can you do in Pantai Cenang, or Chenang Beach, for it to deserve a base camp for your Langkawi adventures? Well, for such a small area, quite a lot.
