BORACAY TRAVEL GUIDE 2023 | Itinerary + Budget + Map
Monday, June 19, 2023
Boracay Island is one of the most loved and most hated island beaches in the Philippines, depending on who you ask. It has one of the finest—if not the finest—white sand in the country, has clear aquamarine waters, and boasts of, not one, but ten white beaches throughout its coastline. The island is also a favorite for watersports; parasailing, banana boats, and jetskiing, you name it, Boracay has it. Below the surface, there are quite a few snorkeling and diving sites around its immediate vicinity. And all these has led to the island being voted by numerous travel publications as one of the best beaches in the Philippines, and even the world.

Ironically, this is also why people steer clear of Boracay. The island has now become so famous that people arrive in droves and development has mushroomed uncontrolled. Add in its wild nightlife, and you get people shaking their heads and moving on to quieter vacation places.

But the reality is that this island really isn’t for that idyllic holiday; this is the Philippine’s party island. Once you accept that, you’ll find that a trip to Boracay can be quite unforgettable.
UNDERSTAND BORACAY

Boracay is an island located on the north western part of Panay in the region of Western Visayas. It is part of the town of Malay in the municipality of Aklan. It was originally populated by the Ati people until its discovery in the 70s and 80s as a backpacker beach destination. In the 90s it became one of the top beaches in the Philippines. Massive tourism took its toll on the island and in 2018, it was closed off for full rehabilitation. Boracay has been acclaimed as one of the world’s best islands by numerous publications and groups.
WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BORACAY

The best time to visit Boracay is during the summer months of March to May. During these months, there’s virtually no rains and the winds are gentle—especially on the side of the popular White Beach. However, it is still possible to visit Boracay during the rainy months of June to November. During this time, strong winds shift from Bulabog Beach to the White Beach, making the former a better place for swimming. Island hopping activities also shift to the other side of the island during these times.
BORACAY TRAVELER ESSENTIAL INFO
● Boracay currency is in Philippine Peso. USD 1.00 is about PHP 56.00.
 ● ATM machines, banks, and money exchange kiosks are readily available on the island. Most of these are located around the White Beach area.
 ● Type A (two flat vertical pins) is the electrical outlet used in Boracay Island
 ● Boracay has a score of low when it comes to crime rates. The most common crimes on the island are drug use (probably due to the numerous parties on the island) and theft.  During my numerous visits to Boracay, I have never once felt unsafe or have fallen victim to any type of crime.
 ● In cases of emergency and hospitalization, Boracay has a lot of clinics and hospitals—the largest of which is St. Gabriele's Medical Center which is open 24 hours.
BORACAY DO’S & DON’TS
After Boracay’s rehabilitation, a few new rules were imposed on people visiting the island to keep its pristine condition as much as possible. While not a few people disagree with the new Boracay rules (especially those who want to eat along the beach, and those who want to bring their dogs along with them), not following these will definitely earn you a fine.
● No littering
● No collecting of sand or pebbles
● No smoking on public places (there are designated smoking areas)
● No drinking of alcoholic beverages on the beach
● No eating on the beach
● No pets on the beach
● No building of sandcastles on the beach
● No parking of motor vehicles on the beachfront
● No fire-dancing on the beach
● No unauthorized flying of drones on the whole island
HOW TO GET TO BORACAY
Boracay Island is part of the municipality of Malay in the province of Aklan. It is located about 315 kilometers south of Manila. The usual route going to Boracay involves a flight from Manila or Cebu to either Kalibo, which is about two hours away by bus or van from the island (fare is about ₱150.00 to ₱200.00), or via Caticlan, a barangay in Malay itself where the jetty sailing to Boracay is located. The boat ride from mainland Aklan to Boracay itself takes less than ten minutes.
Alternatively, one can also take ferries going to Caticlan from a few of the provinces within its vicinity, although travel time is quite long and the areas it sails from are limited.

GETTING AROUND BORACAY

Boracay Island is relatively small, and its road network, narrow and limited. The general means of getting around the island is by walking, cycling, and motorbiking. Those last two are available for rent on a few shops in Boracay.

For public transport, there are e-trikes roaming around its roadways—tricycles using petrol has now been banned in Boracay. Minimum fare is ₱10.00 for non-special trips or “individual” within the White Beach Stations and ₱20.00 for farther destinations. Non-special means the driver can still pick up other passengers. To make sure a driver would only charge you the minimum fare and avoid confusion and confrontation, tell him beforehand that you’re riding non-special or “individual”.

For special trips, where you rent the whole vehicle, fares are set at ₱100.00 for tricycles (up to 6 persons), ₱250.00 for multicabs (up to 11 persons) and ₱20.00 for single motorbikes or habal-habal. Note that prices may vary a bit especially if your destination is quite far. There is a premium of ₱20.00 to ₱50.00 for special rides from 9:00PM onwards.
ORGANIZED TOURS IN BORACAY

Booking a tour in Boracay is easy. Too easy, in fact, it’s almost annoying. Simply walk along the beach path along White Beach and you’d be flocked by tour operators offering anything from island hopping adventures to any water activities you can think of. To be fair, these tours are cheaper compared if you book online or even in your hotel. For Boracay island hopping tours, specify if you want to travel in group, which is more affordable, or if you want to rent the whole boat for a more private tour.
SPEAK BORACAY

Boracay was originally settled by Ati Negritos. Their language is called Inati, although due to the influx of people on the island, I’m not sure if it’s still widely spoken. Nowadays, the island has a mix of languages, from Aklanon, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, and other Visayan languages. To be sure, most people can understand and speak Filipino and English fairly well.
WHERE TO STAY IN BORACAY
Accommodations in Boracay are as numerous as the people visiting it. The beachfront resorts, especially on the White Beach area, are the most expensive ones. Prices, however, decline as you go from Station 1 to Station 3. For cheaper alternatives, there are also lodgings along the side-streets leading to the beaches and even on the main road itself. The key is to book ahead—especially on holidays and weekends—because as numerous as they are, these can easily get filled by incoming tourists.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK IN BORACAY
There is a connotation that food in Boracay is expensive. Well, if you eat on restaurants, it can be really expensive, especially on the beachfront bars and bistros, but delve inside its sidestreets and you can find affordable food in Boracay without reaching the hundred-peso mark. If you’re willing to eat in eateries or carinderia stalls, you can even get lower prices. D’Mall and D’Talipapa also house a few cheap eateries, and they’re right by the White Beach too.

One of the things people go to Boracay for is its nightlife. There are several bars and clubs along the White Beach and a few others set further inland. Parties usually go on until the wee hours of the morning, well, except on Sundays where bars seem to close quite early (if they open at all) and the beach is relatively free of party people. Before the Boracay rehabilitation, you can buy your beer on small convenience stores along the beach and chug them on the beach—this is now illegal, drinking on the beach is strictly prohibited.

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN BORACAY
Small as Boracay is, you’ll never run out of things to do on the island, especially if you have loads of cash. All the water sports you can think of, you can enjoy in Boracay. You can go island hopping—which usually includes snorkeling and cliff jumping with the itinerary—or you can go diving if you’re a licensed diver, or a maybe a fun dive for a first-timer. Inland, there are also a lot you can do—cable cars, ziplines, minor hikes, heck, even a visit to an oceanarium. But, of course, the main draw of the island is still its beaches—the longest and most popular of the ten is the White Beach.

WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY IN BORACAY
While shopping for unique items isn’t really Boracay’s stronger suit, there are numerous stores selling mostly beach-related wares along the island; anything from sandals to swim wear to diving gear. Granted, prices are a bit on the high side. Besides the usual Boracay shirt and ref magnets, consider buying a mug from Starbucks, something you can only buy on the island, and maybe a loop of puka shell bracelets. And yes, take away a bun of chori burger too, just in case you get hungry on the plane back to Manila.

BORACAY SAMPLE ITINERARY & TRAVEL BUDGET
How long should you stay in Boracay? For a relaxed Boracay getaway, I advise staying for at least three days. A Boracay itinerary for two days is actually doable, but it can get quite hectic, especially if you want to try water activities and see the rest of the island besides the White Beach. If you have more time, I suggest you stretch out the itinerary below to fit your stay on the island. A beach is still meant for relaxing, so take your time and make sure that you get to lay on the sand and simply do nothing. On one of our trips, we actually stayed for three weeks in Boracay—our longest visit to the island.

For the travel budget, a vacation to Boracay is only expensive if you let it. If you take out most of the watersports and choose only what you really, really want (plus the island hopping tour, you cannot leave this out) and simply enjoy its beaches and eat on simple eateries, a trip to Boracay can be relatively cheap. For the budget guide below, I purposely didn’t include the transfer from either Kalibo (₱150.00 to ₱200.00 per person) or Caticlan Airport to the jetty going to the island; I only started counting money on the jetty itself. Also, tricycle fees can be further lowered to only ₱20.00 per ride, if you choose to ride non-special (ride-sharing with other passengers).

DeleteGood day sir, ask lang po ako regarding sa Parasailing. Ano pong resort o beach ang Php.800 na parasailing? thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Romen, haven't really tried parasailing yet. I just got those rates from those offering on the beach. Will check, once I go back this week. :)
DeleteGreat article, thanks for the tips! Indeed, Philippines is a beautiful archipelago of islands of adventures and getaways. Unfortunately, there is a large number of tourist targeted scams and safety concerns over here.
ReplyDeleteDo be wary of the Ativan gang/family scam, familiar face scam, sob story scam, the bump and drop, paedophile scam, cards/poker/blackjack scam, beggars, fake goods, pickpockets, fake travel agents, bullet in bag scam, airline desk overweight luggage, immigration officer bribe, taxi spray scam and many more!
Hi, thank you for this as our barkada 6pax is going to visit bora via kalibo this coming sept. However, got worried since our arrival time is at 9pm. Just wanna ask your suggestion as to what van should we ride on and if there is available during our arrival. Read blogs too and saw that some offers for as low as 250 one way for van and boat transfer not sure if terminal and environmental fees are included and if they are also available during our arrival time. If anyone who has a budget friendly recommendations for students like us please free to contact me at 09178246339, 09496350783. This could be of great help for us. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteThere are vans available even after nine in the evening at Kalibo Airport, just go out of the terminal and they would call you, you will not miss it. Make sure you ask what's included with the van fare, you may also haggle.

DeleteHi, I'm Heide. We'll go to boracay next week sept 2-5 with friends group of 5 via Kalibo. and we also have our accomodation already. Things that i was concern are, the trasnfer from kalibo airport to boracay island and also the best activities that we should try there like water sport that we shouldn't miss, retaurant & also island tour or beach that we should go? thank you for the respose :)
ReplyDeleteFor the transfer, please refer to the section how to get to boracay above. For the water activities, you definitely should not miss the island hopping adventure. :)
DeleteHi..we are also planningour boracay trip on march..6 adults and 2 kids. We will be arriving @kalibo airport around 10 pm. Can u advice me what to do best? To stay overnyt at kalibo hotels or to go straight to bocaray at that tym of the nyt? We have 3 and 2 years old kids with us.. thank for the help in advance 😊
ReplyDeleteHi Iline, it's quite easy and convenient to go to Boracay from Kalibo even during the night. I suggest you go straight to the island, unless you have quite a lot of time on hand. :)
DeleteThank you mam! Great help! we'll do that 😊
DeleteNo problem! I'm a sir, by the way. :D
DeleteWow! This is great! 😊 We're visiting boracay this October and this is the best blog I ever read since I start researching about boracay! 😊 Very detailed! 🖒🖒 I screenshot all your suggestion and try to make our boracay vacation the best and cheap as possible. Thank you!! 😊
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michael! Glad you find my Boracay Guide helpful! :)
DeleteAnd sir, may I know which one do you prefer or which one is the cheapest if I book Kalibo transfer online or ako kami nlng mag arrange ng transfer namin pagdating sa Kalibo airport. Thank you godbless
ReplyDeleteHi Michael, it's cheaper if you book it at Kalibo itself. The advantage of booking online is you have sure seats and it saves you the hassle of haggling with the operators. :)
DeleteSuper helpful! May I know what is the name of your hotel? W ill go there this November. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHi Riza, I stayed on a lot of hotels in Boracay. I guess yours would depend on how much your budget is. You may check the list I put up for reference. :)
