Boracay Sunset From Cocoloco Bar

Two cold bottles of Red Horse beer were slid down our wooden table. In front of us, the late afternoon sun was filtering through the coconut trees. On the beach, a group of kids were playing a serious game of Frisbee while tourists frolic across the glittering waters of Boracay. On the horizon, a row of paraw boats were waiting for the sun to set. We were at Cocoloco Boracay—with sand under our feet and a cold beer in our hands—it probably can’t get any better than this.

BORACAY TRAVEL GUIDE

COCOLOCO BORACAY BEACH RESORT

Cocoloco Boracay
ONE OF THE OLDEST BARS IN BORACAY

Situated along the quiet parts of Boracay White Beach in Station 3, Cocoloco Boracay is one of the oldest restaurants on the island. Established in 1979, it features a very rustic and laid back façade, which they claim is reminiscent on how Boracay was before.

COCOLOCO BORACAY’S GARDEN ROOMS

Contrary to what people think, Cocoloco actually has rooms being rented out to tourists—it’s not just a bar. Right at the second floor of their restaurant are two premium beachfront rooms. And a few steps at the back are the rest of Cocoloco’s accommodations—ten rooms at the garden area, which is a minute away from the beach, and five rooms at another structure situated at the foot of a hill on a heavily wooded part of Boracay.

These accommodations are surprisingly modern—totally different from the tropical restobar vibe that you see out front. But still, along with clean white walls, wood accents remind you that this you’re still at Cocoloco Boracay. Each room has air-conditioning, mini-fridge, coffee & tea-making facilities, flat-screen TV, electronic safe, modern toilet and bath with hot water, and a balcony with a view of the sea. Most are good for two persons, with a few large enough to accommodate up to four persons.

COCOLOCO BAR & RESTAURANT

Cocoloco’s open-aired bar and restaurant is what usually people see when they pass by the place—usually populated by Caucasian guys having a drink. And even with their homey and rustic vibe, it does get a bit intimidating to sit down and have a drink. But sit down and drink we did.

Besides alcohol, they do serve food. Their menu consists of mostly of Filipino comfort food, mixed with a few Western dishes. I heard that their Cocoloco Special Pizza is really good. They also have bar chows and a separate grilled menu from JT’s Manukan, which has partnered with them.

COCOLOCO’S BAR AREA

During the final week of our three weeks vacation in Boracay, we transferred from our accommodation from Ferra Hotel Garden Suites near Bulabog Beach to Golden Phoenix Hotel Boracay in White Beach. And this led to a change of watering hole. From our usual afternoon haunt at Sur, we decided to try out Cocoloco’s restobar.

And once we did, we didn’t look back. Late afternoons were spent here, us with a few bottles of beer, and our toddler A, playing on the sand with Filipino, French, American, and European kids.

Cocoloco’s bar has one of the best views of Station 3. The seats right out front are the most coveted in the house—go early if you want to occupy these. They also have a pool table and a few shelves of books—perfect if you don’t have someone to while away the time.

Happy hour is from 3:00PM to 7:00PM for walk-in customers, while in-house guests enjoy a whole day happy hour.

SUNSET AND BEERS AT COCOLOCO BORACAY

Our afternoons at Cocoloco were some of the most relaxed during our Boracay trip. The bar’s open and rustic vibe, its location—which is far from the heavy foot traffic of White Beach—and the friendly and chatty staff, really contributes to its chill atmosphere.

The bar being not that big, with seats close together, makes you talk and be friendly with other bar patrons. Well, you really can’t help it—you overhear something familiar from the seat next to yours, and soon, travel stories fill the night. And that completely adds to the charm of Cocoloco Boracay for us.
