What do you eat when you’re in Malabon? Well, pancit Malabon, of course.

The birthplace of pancit Malabon, there are numerous panciterias offering this noodle delicacy in the city. But where can you actually get the best pancit Malabon in Malabon? And what if you don’t live there, are there panciterias offering pancit Malabon that are at par with those in Malabon City? As a kid who actually grew up in Malabon and has tasted innumerable bilaos of pancit Malabon for every occasion—and still wants more—let me share the best pancit Malabon I’ve tried, not only in Malabon itself, but in the whole of Metro Manila as well.

A TYPICAL BILAO OF PANCIT MALABON

To be sure, there are still pancit Malabon restaurants that I’ve yet to try. So, I will definitely update this article from time to time as I try new pancit places in the city. If you also have suggestions for the best pancit Malabon, just drop a comment and I will try my best to visit it too.

Note that this list is not in any order. My advice is to try each one out, as they almost always have something unique to offer.

Soft, slightly sweet buns contrasting with an umami-filled meat filling—be it saucy pork asado or juicy bola-bola, siopao is one of the Philippines’ most delightful comfort foods. It was introduced by Chinese immigrants during the Spanish period and it has since become a staple, not only in Binondo—Manila’s Chinatown—but in every Chinese restaurants in the country as well.

But have you tasted the best siopao in Metro Manila? Here’s a list of the best and unique ones I’ve actually tried. I’m sure that there’s more out there, so drop a comment if you have a siopao recommendation. I’ll update this best siopao list from time to time.

I recently contributed another Insider’s Guide article for Inflight Traveller issue 30, this time for a Bohol listicle, Top 10 Things To Do in Bohol. Again, I can’t seem to get a hold of a physical copy, so I guess a PDF will do. Inflight Traveller is the official inflight magazine for AirSWIFT Airlines Philippines, so if ever you get the chance to fly via AirSWIFT, grab me a copy, please?

Here’s my article in its original form:

I got to write a feature for Inflight Traveller magazine issue 27 last February about Coron. The reason I’m only getting to write about it now is that I can’t seem to get a hold of the magazine from bookstores and I only got to finally have a copy when I chanced upon a digital one on Issuu’s website.

The article is the usual 10 Things To Do listicle and features major tourist destinations in Coron and Busuanga. Of course, I get to have my photos printed too.

Here’s my original version of the story:

TEN THINGS TO DO IN CORON

---

TEN THINGS TO DO IN CORON ARTICLE IN INFLIGHT TRAVELLER 27

Fine white sand. Clear azure waters. Cobalt blue sky. With summer finally here, everyone’s craving for some beach action. And Palawan, the Philippines’ so called last frontier, tops the bill when it comes to beach destinations in the country. And we’re not just saying that, it has been hailed numerous times by both international magazines and institutions as one of the best, not only in the Philippines, but in the world.

TEN THINGS TO DO IN CORON ARTICLE IN INFLIGHT TRAVELLER 27

There’s actually three major places to visit in the peninsula—Puerto Princesa at the center, El Nido on the north, and Coron on the far, far north. Let’s focus on that last one. Coron, is actually one of the two towns that make up Busuanga Island. Busuanga on the north west, Coron on the south east. And Coron is where it’s happening.

TEN THINGS TO DO IN CORON ARTICLE IN INFLIGHT TRAVELLER 27

The base of operation for most tourists is Coron Town. It’s where most of the resorts, restaurants, and tourist spots are—including, of course, much of the beach destinations on the area. Note, however, that there is no actual beach at the town itself, you’d have to ride a boat to swim and frolic on white sandy beaches. But if you have cash to burn, there are luxury resorts like Huma Island Resort and Two Seasons Coron located off remote islands that have their own exclusive beaches.

So, what do you actually do when in Coron? Here are ten of them.

HOP AROUND THE ISLANDS

---

MORNING SUN AT CORON’S TWIN LAGOON

Since there is no beach in Coron Town, to get to them you’d have to join island hopping tours. And these can easily be availed through the resort you’re staying in or the Calamian Tourist Boat Association.

A Coron island hopping tour usually consists of visiting the lagoons, inland lakes, and beaches of the karts-laden Coron Island or Isla Higantes. Some of the most popular destinations are Banul Beach, Barracuda Lake, Kayangan Lake—considered as one of the cleanest lakes in the Philippines, Twin Lagoon, and CYC Beach.

Once you’ve explored these, then you can have a go at the farther islands of Malcapuya, Banana Island, Bulog Dos, Waling-Waling, and Ditaytayan Islands the next day. And if you still have more time to spare, there are farther islands to explore like Dibatok, Calumbayan, Pass, Tara, and the North and South Cay Islands.

Tours are usually done using traditional outrigger boats, but if you want a swankier ride, speedboats and yachts are also available.

SNORKEL ALONG THE CORALS

---

THE MALWAWEY CORAL GARDEN

Coron has one of the most healthy and pristine underwater marine life in the country. And included with the island hopping tours are snorkeling adventures.

The most easily accessible of these are the nearby Siete Pecados with the site bordered by seven islets, the Malwawey Coral Garden which is replete with massive table corals, and the reef near the Skeleton Wreck which has a very shallow depth. Farther away is the reef fronting Banana Island, which is deeper than those mentioned previously. It is also interesting to snorkel at Kayangan Lake, even though there’s really no coral beneath it, but more for its underwater rock formations—so be sure, to bring your gear with you when you go there.

Life vests and snorkeling gear are also provided for, so all you have to do is jump in the water and enjoy the underwater scenery.

WRECK DIVE

---

CORON’S SKELETON WRECK

If you want a more advanced underwater activity, Coron is just the place for you. With a total of twelve well-preserved World War II shipwrecks lying on its seabed, it’s the perfect place for a unique diving experience. These are mostly Imperial Japanese wartime ships sunk by the US Task Force 38 aircrafts in 1944.

For the uninitiated the Skeleton Wreck–a 25-meter Japanese supply ship—can be seen even by casual snorkelers and is usually included in island hopping tours. But for the real deal, the most popular of the wrecks are the largely intact Irako, the 118-meter long Akitsushima seaplane carrier, the 140-meter Kogyo freighter, and the largest and most popular wreck in Coron, the massive 170-meter long Okikawa Maru Japanese tanker.

The best way to enjoy wreck diving in Coron is thru liveaboard diving safaris where you actually lodge on a small sea vessel, visiting dive sites all through your chosen stay.

LEARN ABOUT THE HERITAGE OF CULION ISLAND

---

THE LA IMMACULADA CONCEPCION CHURCH IN CULION ISLAND

For history buffs, an interesting island to visit when in Coron is the former leper colony island of Culion. Delegated as a segregation colony in 1901 by the Americans for people suffering leprosy, it has since embraced its past with the establishment of the Culion Museum and Archives, documenting its dark history. There are also fortifications and a massive stone church, the La Immaculada Concepcion Church, built during the Spanish era along the town proper.

The island is actually a separate town from Coron, but is near enough to be included with the usual tours.

HIKE UP MOUNT TAPYAS

---

AFTERNOON AT CORON’S MT. TAPYAS

Coron Town sits right beside Mount Tapyas, a 210-meter hill topped with a huge Hollywood-esque CORON sign and a massive white cross. The mountain is a popular climbing destination, not only for tourists but for locals as well.

Getting up is actually not that hard, since there are wide concrete steps that ascends from the base of the hilll up to its peak. Just be sure to pace yourselves, it is a tough 718 steps right up to the top. Time your climb during the afternoons and enjoy the view of the nearby islands along with a fiery sunset and a cold drink from local vendors along the stairs.

Besides the main viewing deck, there are also a few pavilions off the side of the hills where you can relax and rest while taking in the view.

ENGAGE IN A SAFARI

---

FREE-ROAMING ZEBRAS AT BUSUANGA’S CALAUIT SAFARI PARK

Ever thought of doing a safari but don't have the moolah to fly all the way to Africa? Well, the town of Busuanga—which sits right next to Coron—has a mini safari of sorts to bridge that dream. Located on the secluded Calauit Island, the 3,700-hectare Calauit Safari Park is an animal reserve home to Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, and indigenous species like Calamian deer, Palawan bearded pig, Philippine crocodile, Philippine porcupine, binturong, and the Philippine mouse-deer roaming freely across a natural and picturesque landscape.

The exotic non-indigenous animals, including waterbucks, elands, impalas, topis, bushbucks, and gazelles—which has since died off—were shipped all the way from Kenya by the former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos during the late seventies.

FOOD TRIP ALONG CORON TOWN

---

BABY BACK RIBS AT SANTINO’S GRILL IN CORON TOWN

Coron, a once sleepy town with a few basic eateries catering to tourists is now a food hub complete with posh local cafes and interesting restaurants. A few of the must-tries are baby-back ribs from Santino’s Grill, brick oven-style pizza from Trattoria Altrov’e Coron, grilled meals from KT’s Sinugba sa Balay, budget pinoy meals at Tita Esh, and of course, a bag of cashew nuts from numerous stores around town.

After dinner, there are bars you can drop by for a couple of glasses of drink. Popular ones include Sigpin Bar, Coco Bar, Pirates Tavern Bar, Isla Pool Bar, Tribu Kuridas Bar, and Sunburn Rooftop Lounge.

For your island hopping adventure, don’t forget to drop by the Coron wet market early in the morning for fresh seafood that your boatman will cook for you come lunchtime.

ENGAGE IN WATERSPORTS ACTIVITIES

---

Like all popular beach destinations, Coron has its share of exciting water sport activities for hyperactive solo adventurers and big groups. These are usually held at the popular Royal Island Resort. Jet-skis, parasails, banana boats, flyfish, bandwagon, hurricane, and crystal kayaks—you name it, they probably have it. Get those nerves of steel ready and prepare to get thrown out into the water.

EXPERIENCE A MANGROVE NIGHT TOUR

---

Forget about resting after a day of beaching around. Avail of a Coron night tour and be bedazzled by a flurry of magical lights from above and below while enjoying a sumptuous buffet aboard a floating restaurant.

Cruise along the mangroves and witness a symphony of lights from fireflies living along the mangrove forests—a tell-tale sign that the area is still virgin and far from pollution—and watch as bioluminescent planktons glow across the darkened waters of the bay.

DIP AT MAQUINIT HOT SPRINGS

---

THE RICKETY BRIDGE AT MAQUINIT HOT SPRINGS

The perfect way to cap a day of island hopping, a hike up Mount Tapyas, or even a day of food tripping is via a night dip at the hot spring waters of Maquinit. Located at the far end of town, it can either be accessed via tricycles or by boat—if you're coming from an island hopping trip. The natural gravel-bottom pools of Maquinit Hot Springs has an average temperature of 39 to 40 degrees Celsius and are said to have healing properties. The water is actually scalding hot on first dip, but you’ll eventually get used to the heat.

But healing properties aside, its warmth is more than enough to refresh and rejuvenate your body after all the island and inland activities you did in Coron.

Pantai Cenang is said to be the most visited beach in Malaysia—it is, shall we say, Malaysia’s version of our Boracay. We’ve visited Langkawi a couple of times before, but it is actually the first time we’re staying in the exact vicinity, courtesy of Mercure Langkawi Pantai Cenang. We’re definitely excited since we haven’t fully tried the Pantai Cenang experience before since we’re usually lodged on the more remote parts of the island during the past visits.

But what exactly can you do in Pantai Cenang, or Chenang Beach, for it to deserve a base camp for your Langkawi adventures? Well, for such a small area, quite a lot.

George Town is Penang’s main tourist draw. Its city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—with its charming, old-world shophouses and handsome colonial structures. Its popularity with tourists skyrocketed in 2012 when street art and wall murals started appearing along its age-old walls.

When you mention Penang, the first thing that comes to mind, besides food, is the UNESCO World Heritage inscribed city of Central George Town—it is the state’s claim to fame. But Penang is huge, and there are other places on the island worth visiting, like the suburbs of Tanjung Bungah and Tanjung Tokong—both off-the-radar places for tourism that can be explored for a day, or even half a day. Perfect for people who’ve already ticked all the places to see in George Town or those looking for a side trip from Batu Ferringhi.

The Philippines, an intricate tapestry of over 7,000 islands, offers an unparalleled blend of diverse cultures, ancient traditions, and awe-inspiring natural beauty. To traverse its vastness is to embark on a twenty one-day odyssey, wherein every day unveils a new chapter of wonder and discovery. While quick getaways might give you a fleeting glimpse of its marvels, a detailed three-week exploration promises depth, insights, and transformative experiences. These seven meticulously crafted routes, encompassing a generous span of three weeks each, offer travelers a holistic dive into the very soul of this mesmerizing archipelago.

Every afternoon after our kid wakes from his nap, we’d quickly go out of our hotel, ride a jeep to pueblo, walk along the old downtown area of Zamboanga City, and be transported back in time. In our mind, this was probably how Manila looked and felt, back in the day. The view would then open up to the sea. We’d buy some snacks, sit beside the breakwater, and along with school kids out with their friends, and wait for the sun to say adios. Those are my memories of our trip to Zamboanga.

We spent four days in and around the city, exploring not only its downtown area, but a few of its outlying islands and islets as well. It is, surprisingly, very walkable, and more importantly, very safe. Besides our usual afternoon jaunt to Paseo Del Mar, we were able to do quite a lot of things and were able to visit more than a few sights in Zamboanga City. With its numerous tourist spots, a weekend trip is definitely not enough to see everything.

PUEBLO / DOWNTOWN ZAMBOANGA

---

This is the heart of Zamboanga City. The downtown area, dubbed in Chavacano—the local language in the city—as Pueblo. It is located right beside the sea, on the southern part of the peninsula. This is where it’s all happening and also the gateway to Zamboanga’s Pink Sand Beach in Sta. Cruz Island.

Let’s start our steps from one of the most iconic places in Zamboanga City, Fort Pilar and move westward from there.

Fort Pilar

INSIDE THE WALLS OF FORT PILAR

A National Cultural Treasure, Fort Pilar is a military stone fortress constructed by the Spaniards in the 1600s. It was used as defense against pirates and Moro raiders from Jolo, and its cornerstone marked the founding date of Zamboanga as a city. It was built with the help of Mexicans and Peruvians, leading to the development of the Zamboangenos creole language, Chavacano. Visitors are allowed to access its courtyard and climb its fortifications.

But more than that, it has a museum on its second floor. The building used to be the residence of a wealthy Chinese trader, Don Francisco Barrios before it became General John J. Pershing’s house when he was assigned to suppress insurrections in Mindanao.

Across the street from Rizal Park are two of the country’s most popular fast food chains. While, these aren’t usually tourist spots, the ones in Zamboanga City’s downtown are quite curious since they are housed on colonial-style structures. McDonald’s occupies a repurposed Victorian neo-classical building that used to house the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1928. From the Zamboanga Public Market near the city hall, ride a jeep to R.T. Lim Boulevard or Cawa-Cawa Boulevard. Zamboanga’s baywalk is a popular place for locals, especially during the afternoons and early evening. The seaside park is clean and very safe. It’s a good place to walk or jog as it stretches for about 600 meters. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset while munching on street food. On the far end of the boulevard, tables and chairs are set for balut, penoy, and beef chicharon—the accompanying vinegar, which range from mild to very spicy, is a must try.

AROUND ZAMBOANGA CITY

Here are some of the tourist spots around Zamboanga City that aren’t located in downtown or even the Pasonanca Park. Some of these are just a few minutes from the city center, while others are quite far and might require a full day visit.

Rainbow Mosque

THE UBER COLORFUL RAINBOW MOSQUE

The most colorful mosque you’ll probably ever see is located at Barangay Sta. Maria, a jeepney ride away from Zamboanga’s downtown area. Formally called Masjid Al-Islamia, it has since been dubbed as the Rainbow Mosque due to its ultra-colorful façade. But it wasn’t always like this, its rainbow hues were painted on its white walls after the Marawi Siege as a call for peace and unity.

Located about seven kilometers away from the city hall, off the west coast of Zamboanga City is a small colorful village populated by Yakans, a group of people who originated from Basilan during the seventies. And what colors their village are the textile weavings they do by hands. Traditionally, they weave semmek dresses for wearing, but now, they’ve included bags, table runners, blankets, and even shoes into their repertoire.

Merloquet Falls

THE MASSIVE MERLOQUET FALLS ~ PHOTO BY TIMOJO508 FROM WIKIMEDIA

On the border of Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay lies one of the grandest waterfalls in Zamboanga Peninsula. Merloquet Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, rising to a height of about fifteen meters with a width of ten to fifteen meters. It is quite far from downtown Zamboanga, but it’s an excellent destination if you have a free day to spare in the city.

SHOPPING IN ZAMBOANGA

---

Those who travel to shop won’t be disappointed with Zamboanga. The city has a good combination of modern malls and local and traditional shops. Be sure to get enough baggage allowance for your flights back.

Canelar Barter Trade

COLORFUL WARES AT THE CANELAR BARTER TRADE CENTER

One of the best places to shop in Zamboanga City is at the Canelar Barter Trade. It’s a open-air dry market selling mostly Malaysian textiles, clothes, and food stuff. Be sure to bring home batik shirts, colorful scarves, unique instant noodles, egg udang noodles for making mee goreng at home, Malaysian white coffee, teh tahrik, and Apollo chocolates.

Plaza Pilar

AFTERNOON AT PLAZA PILAR

Located right across Fort Pilar, Plaza Pilar is a small area surrounded by a colonnade selling souvenirs, local foodstuff, and religious items. Be sure to get a bunch of apa, a crispy wafer-like rolled treat, when you visit. It’s also a good place to have a photo of the Fort with a foreground of flying pigeons—as there are lots in the area.

Magay Zamboanga Public Market

Near the Zamboanga City Hall is the hustle and chaos of the Zamboanga Magay Public Market. If you like market places, this is the most massive this side of the city. It’s a good place to see and buy local wares, and the cheapest place for street food.

Pettit Barracks Night Market

CHEAP UKAY UKAY FINDS AT THE PETTIT BARRACKS NIGHT MARKET

As evening arrives, Rizal Street closes to vehicular traffic and stalls upon stalls of ukay ukay clothes start to line the road. This Zamboanga night market stretches for two blocks, with food stalls hawking local street food like mee goreng on the rear part, perfect for after-shopping snacks. It actually reminds me of Baguio’s Harrison Road Ukay Ukay.

Shopping Malls

INSIDE KCC MALL IN ZAMBOANGA ~ PHTO FROM WIKIMEDIA

Zamboanga is a bustling city and most people from the neighboring islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi do their shopping here. And like all big cities, there are numerous shopping malls in the area—KCC Mall, SM City Mindpro, Southway Mall, South Supermall, Gaisano Grand Mall, CityMall Tetuan, to name a few.

OPENING HOURS: Most open at 9:00AM and closes at 7:00PM to 9:00PM

ZAMBOANGA STA. CRUZ ISLAND TOUR

---

One of the most popular tourist spot in the city is the Zamboanga Pink Beach—one of only a handful in the world. And this is located in Sta. Cruz Island, which is just some minutes by boat away from downtown Zamboanga.

• Subic Pink Sand Beach
• Komodo Island Pink Beach

Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar

LITTLE STA. CRUZ ISLAND’S SANDBAR ALSO HAS A PINK HUE

The first place tourists visit when going to Zamboanga’s Sta. Cruz Island is the sandbar that extends from Little Sta. Cruz Island. This is a small islet before the main island. Tourists are not allowed on the island, but they can go down on the sandbar if the tide is low and the sandbar is above water. Swimming is prohibited though, as the area has riptides which can sweep swimmers away.

Sta. Cruz Island Mangrove Lagoon

EXPLORING THE MANGROVE FOREST ABOARD A BOAT

Before heading to the beach, a side-tour to the mangrove forest of Sta. Cruz Island is a worthy experience. You transfer to a smaller paddle boat, and ride around the mangroves where you can enjoy the scenery, have a taste of the freshest seagrapes or lato, and experience handling stingless jellyfishes.

Vinta Ride

RIDING A REAL VINTA BOAT

One of the highlights of a Sta. Cruz tour is their vinta ride—those colorful boats you only see on textbooks. After the lagoon tour, a small vinta awaits visitors—one which you can actually paddle and ride around on.

Zamboanga Pink Beach

ZAMBOANGA CITY’S FAMOUS PINK BEACH

And finally, the main event of a Sta. Cruz Island tour, Zamboanga’s Pink Beach. The beach is actually not as pink as Barbie pink, but it only has a hint of pinkness when viewed on a certain angle, especially on the foreshore area where the sand is wet. This is due to crushed red corals that mix with the sand. Swimming and snorkeling is a good activity here, just be aware of the strong current.

Seafood Picnic Lunch

SEAFOOD GALORE BY THE BEACH

Depending on the tour you availed, it may or may not have a seafood lunch bundled with it. We booked ours with iTravel Tourist Lane and it does have an excellent seafood lunch on a cottage by the beach. Shrimp, crabs, roasted fish and squid, chicken barbecue, and fruits—it was one of the best meals I’ve had in Zamboanga.

Badjao Cemetery

THE OLD BADJAO CEMETERY AT STA. CRUZ ISLAND

Before going back to mainland Zamboanga, we dropped by the Badjao Cemetery in Sta. Cruz Island. The burial ground was used by the Badjao and Sama Bangingi tribes even before Sta. Cruz Island became famous as a tourist spot. The graves are small and are usually adorned with gravestones made of wood and small wooden boats—reflecting the Badjao’s seafaring way of life.

Scuba Diving at Sta. Cruz Island

Another activity that can be done in Sta. Cruz Island is scuba diving. The whole Sta. Cruz Island is actually surrounded by a reef wall, but diving isn’t allowed there due to very strong rip tides. The only approved diving site is located near the Little Sta. Cruz Island where there’s also a reef wall.

As of the moment, there’s no dive operator or shop accredited by the LGU since the pandemic happened. I will update this once diving resumes in Sta. Cruz Island.

ONCE ISLAS ZAMBOANGA

---

One of the newest tourist spots in Zamboanga can be found in Barangay Panubigan, the Once Islas Island Hopping Tour. It is located about an hour away from downtown, but the travel time is very much worth it. I found the beaches here to be even better than at Sta. Cruz Island. While there are eleven islands in the vicinity, only three islands are open to tourist.

Bisaya Bisaya Island

CLEAR WATERS AT BISAYA BISAYA ISLAND

The most adventure-filled island on the tour is Bisaya-Bisaya Island. It has a trail that circles around the half the island with beautiful rock formations, a natural tidal pool off one of its islets which you can reach by walking on a sandbar during low tide, and a pretty fine beach to boot too.

Sirommon Island

SIROMMON ISLAND HAS A SANDBAR DURING LOW TIDE

The island best for snorkeling is Sirumon Island. And there’s actually a raft that can take you to the best snorkeling spot. But if the tide’s too low, snorkeling a few meters from the shore is not that bad too. Plus, it has a sandbar too. The beach is also super fine.

Baung Baung Island

BAUNG-BAUNG ISLAND IS NAMED AFTER THE COCONUT SHELL

The final island on the list is Baung Baung Island. I like this island best for its waters, absolutely no current—a real pleasure to swim on. It also has a view deck that can be hiked up through 248 steps.

ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP

---

The food scene in Zamboanga City is really good. Point in fact, I gained weight after visiting the city. For a dedicated article for Zamboanga’s food scene. Check these out.

• Zamboanga Food Trip

• Mee Goreng Zamboanga

Moro Cuisine

A MENAGERIE OF MORO CUISINE

Zamboanga’s culinary landscape is very different from most of the Philippines. Some of the best places to try these are at Andi’s Special Satti, Bay Tal Mal Restaurant, and Dennis Coffee Garden.

Seafood

CURACHA LATHERED WITH ALAVAR SAUCE

The city is famous for its curacha or spanner crab and there are several restaurants you can try to get the best out of it. A few of the famous ones are Alavar Seafood Restaurant (their Alavar sauce is a must) and Vista Del Mar Restaurant.

Malaysian Food

ONE OF THE BEST MEE GORENG WE TRIED WAS FROM OLE OLE RESTAURANT

Being so close to Malaysia, their food has seeped in to the tables of Zamboangeños. We hunted for the best mee goreng and other Malay dishes this side of the Philippines and found them at Ole Ole Restaurant, Tinis Restaurant, and on makeshift stalls selling mee goreng along the streets.

Street Food

A SAMPLE OF ZAMBOANGA;S STREETFOOD

Zamboanga street food is also very unique. Be sure to try their local fishballs, coconut sugar-laden taho, crispy salvaro and apa, okoy, pastil, and experience having balut, beef chicharon, and mee goreng along the breakwater of R.T. Lim Boulevard.

Everything In Between

ZAMBOANGA’S FAMOUSE KNICKERBOCKER DESSERT

And if you want something less adventurous, Zamboanga City also has the usual fast food chains, plus restaurants serving traditional Filipino and Western fares—if you want Chinese, they have those too. We tried some of the best at Bar Code, Country Chicken Restaurant, and Hacienda De Palmeras Restaurant.

ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA FESTIVAL

---

The best time to visit Zamboanga City is during the month of October when they celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. Here are some of the festival highlights.

Regatta De Zamboanga

VINTA RACE AT REGATTA DE ZAMBOANGA

This is the ultimate vinta boat race in Zamboanga City. Multitudes of vintas race across the waters fronting R.T. Lim Boulevard using only hand power or paddling.

ZAMPEX

DELICIOUS FOOD PRODUCTS DISPLAYED AT ZAMPEX

The ultimate in shopping in Zamboanga City. ZAMPEX or the Zamboanga Peninsula Expo features the best of what the region offers—textiles, clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, furniture, and most importantly food products! This is usually held at a convention center, and the last one I attended was held at the Palacio del Sur, the event hall of Marcian Garden Hotel.

Asao Lechon Festival

ROASTING FOR THE ASAO LECHON FESTIVAL

Part of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the Asao Lechon Festival where lechoneros from all over Zamboanga City compete for the best lechon in the city, parading them, and letting everyone have a taste—for free! By the way, Asao is not a place but rather a chavacano term for grilled or roasted food.

Mascota De Zamboanga

THE GRANDEST OF THE GRAND GOWNS CAN BE FOUND AT MASCOTA DE ZAMBOANGA

The most beautiful terno gowns—inspired by opulent ladies during the Spanish era in Zamboanga City—competes for the annual Mascota De Zamboanga. Local artists sometimes take a year to create these masterpieces.

Zamboanga Hermosa Street Dance

THE REVELRY OF ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA’S STREET DANCING COMPETITION

The Zamboanga Hermosa Festival climaxes in a street dancing competition by various barangays in the city. The dancing spreads through the streets of the city before culminating at the Paseo Del Mar for their final performance.
