AUSTRALIA | Rydges World Square, Leveling Up at Sydney’s CBD

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

It was way past our bedtime, but since our blogger friend, J of Lakwatserong Tsinelas, has just arrived in Sydney to join us for a few days, we thought of having a few pints of beer on the many happening bars around the city before calling it a night. We literally walked high and low along the city’s hilly roads, only to be turned away every single time because we were wearing slippers. Apparently, most bars, if not all, in Sydney doesn’t allow such in their establishments—you can walk in shirtless and get in, as long as you’re wearing shoes. We walked back to our hotel, dry and mildly bemused.

After spending two nights on the most affordable lodging we could find in town, Sydney Central Inn, we transferred to a more upscale hotel at Sydney’s CBD as a wedding gift. Rydges World Square fitted our bill, not too expensive by Australian standards, and still within the heart of the city. The best part was, it’s literally two minutes by foot from our first lodging.

CHECKING IN AT SYDNEY’S RYDGES WORLD SQUARE

Accommodations in Australia are extremely expensive. As C told me, the price for a night in our room at the Rydges World Square is comparable to a single night on a water bungalow in, wait for it, Maldives. To be fair, our room can bed four persons, albeit without breakfast (most hotels in Australia doesn’t offer them). But still, it’s not even a suite!

THE LOBBY LOUNGE AREA

We checked in quite early at the hotel since we needed to catch a lunch with a friend who’s working at Sydney, then after that, quickly head over to Circular Quay to join a Sydney Harbour Cruise. Our room wasn’t ready at the time, but they let us leave our bags at the concierge.

It wasn’t after we visited the Sydney Opera House and ate a late buffet dinner at Sydney Tower’s revolving restaurant that we were able to check in.

In all fairness, the Rydges World Square can indeed command a higher price compared to other lodgings in the city. The lobby is sleek and posh, and our room, a Deluxe Twin Room, reflects that too. The floor is softly carpeted in brown tones, there’s ample storage spaces, it has the usual flatscreen cable television, fast wi-fi, mini-bar, and an en suite toilet and bath with premium toiletries.

We all agreed though that its winning feature are its beds and pillows. It was one of the most comfortable sleep I’ve had outside my own room. Online reviews on travel websites even agree with us. Apparently they use these so-called Dream Bed and Pillows, and they even sell them!

ONE OF THE PUBS NEAR RYDGES

Another good point at staying at Rydges is its location. It actually sits right beside a shopping mall in Pitt Street and has numerous restaurants and bars less than a minute away from its doors.

BEER, FINALLY!

Unfortunately, those bars also didn’t let us in during our beer hunt night. So back in our room, ready to hit the bed, we thought of checking out the mini-bar, and lo and behold, there’s our query—four extremely cold beers, ours for the taking. Thank you, Rydges World Square, you just made our day.
