LUMOS FLOAT EVO SPECS & PRICING

Made by LUMOS, a Singapore-based brand, the LUMOS FLOAT EVO comes only in smart version, meaning it can connect to the Internet and comes pre-installed with apps like YouTube, Netflix, and other TV apps. You don’t need to connect a phone, a thumb drive, or a laptop to project a video.

It comes in two colors, silver and gold, and can be purchased directly from the LUMOS website for ₱9,999.00. The delivery fee is free, and they usually ship out in one to three working days.

Below is the full specification of the LUMOS FLOAT EVO:

OUT OF THE BOX

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector
THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO, UNBOXED

The FLOAT EVO smart projector comes in LUMOS’ signature minimalist white box. It measures 28 (length) x 23 (depth) x 20 (height) centimeters and weighs about 1.5 kilograms. As always, the box is securely padded, so you won’t need to worry about having it shipped to your homes.

Inside, it includes a remote control, a 1.5-meter power cord with a 90-degree angle female end, which I really like, an HDMI cable—which you can use to connect a laptop to the projector—and a user manual.
Gone is the RCA to AV 3.5mm jack cable for connecting to external speakers and the screws for permanently installing the projector, which was included in the original LUMOS FLOAT.

MOVIE SESSION: THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO HOME THEATER EXPERIENCE

After designating the LUMOS DAYSTAR as our default home theater for watching movies, we set it aside for the moment to test the LUMOS FLOAT EVO if it can hold its own for an afternoon movie session with the family.

THE BUILD

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector
THE FLOAT EVO BUILD QUALITY

The LUMOS FLOAT EVO’s build is very similar to the original LUMOS FLOAT—plasticky but still sturdy enough to withstand common handling. It is about twice larger than the original, measuring 16 (length) x 20 (depth) x 18 (height) centimeters. when set up for watching. It is still very compact for a native 1080p home projector and definitely smaller and easier to store than our favorite DAYSTAR.

The brace—which can be vertically rotated 270 degrees—is now made of the same plastic material, unlike the metal brace from the original, and seems permanently fixed to the projector body. It doesn’t have screw slots at the bottom, so I guess it isn’t really made for mounting but is designed more for table or shelf placement. Underneath, I like how the brace has rubber pads at the bottom to keep it steady and a tripod screw, which you can use to mount it on a tripod.

TURNING IT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME

OPENING THE FLOAT EVO FOR THE FIRST TIME

The LUMOS FLOAT EVO automatically adjusts its focus and keystone position upon turning it on, which is really convenient. No need to fuss through the menu to correct picture clarity and angle distortion to make it fully level. I found, however, that the keystone correction isn’t as accurate as those with the LUMOS DAYSTAR. Nevertheless, it’s still an upgrade from the original LUMOS FLOAT, which does not have an automatic focus and keystone correction.

The next thing to do was to connect to the Wi-Fi, which was easy enough. Then, correct the time and date settings by choosing your correct Time Zone and turning on the Automatic Date & Time. This is an important step, as you can’t stream on YouTube with an incorrect time and date.

THE REMOTE CONTROL

THE INCLUDED REMOTE CONTROL

Similar to LUMOS projector remote controls I’ve tried, LUMOS FLOAT EVO is very intuitive and responsive. It works even if you don’t point it directly to the unit—which is quite important, since most users tend to point it to the projected image, rather than the unit itself.

Nevertheless, coming from the DAYSTAR’s classy-looking remote control, the FLOAT EVO’s looks a bit cheap in comparison due to the four white buttons located on the bottom part of the remote. I’m nitpicking here, but in my opinion, the prints on the white buttons can be made thinner for a more elegant look.

THE INTERFACE

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector Interface
THE WHALE TV LAUNCHER INTERFACE USED BY LUMOS FLOAT EVO

The FLOAT EVO’s interface is similar to its predecessor, which is divided into six tab categoriesSearch, Home, Apps, Video, Music, and Settings.

The projector opens on the Home tab, which has pre-selected apps displayed—Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, and Spotify, among a few more. Press the left button, and you get to the SEARCH tab, which you can use to search YouTube for content. The APPS tab has permanent categories for Videos, News, Music, Sports, and Lifestyle. And below it, actual apps installed on the projector.

The VIDEO tab displays categories like Movies, Entertainment, Kids, Sports, and Life that, once clicked, will take you to YouTube. The MUSIC tab’s category buttons work similarly in nature, taking you to YouTube music videos instead. Below that are recommended apps you can install.

And finally, the SETTINGS tab. This is where you can access the projector’s Network, Bluetooth, Projection, Language, Date, System, Apps, and Other Settings.

The FLOAT EVO utilizes a Whale TV Launcher on an Android 9 OS, which I’m really not a big fan of. I find it to be too cluttered and with too many unnecessary tabs and buttons. For the interface, the clean and straightforward interface of the original LUMOS RAY still wins it for me.

CUSTOMIZING THE INTERFACE

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector Custom Interface
CUSTOMIZING THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO USING THE PROJECTIVY LAUNCHER FROM GOOGLE PLAY

Unfortunately, there is no permanent way to customize the LUMOS FLOAT EVO’s interface.

I’ve tried the TV Launcher, which can be downloaded on the native App Store, and my favorite, Projectivy Launcher, from Google Play. Both can be properly installed, and both can customize the interface; however, once you hit the Home button on the remote control or if you turn off the projector, the FLOAT EVO’s interface would immediately revert to the original Whale TV Launcher.

The problem lies with the Whale TV Launcher’s Accessibility Settings, which are hidden and inaccessible from its menu. So, you can either just live with the cluttered interface or manually open the Projectivy Launcher every time you use the projector and stay away from the Menu button.

TV APPS

THE APPS SECTION ON THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO

The LUMOS FLOAT EVO can be installed with TV apps from its native App Store and Google Play. It also comes with pre-installed apps like YouTube, Netflix, aDrama, OnStream, among others.

Unlike with the LUMOS DAYSTAR, I didn’t encounter any issues in installing apps from the Google Play.

I did, however, encounter an issue with the pre-installed Netflix app, getting an error message: “Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. Please try again later. (-1007)” error message. It was, nevertheless, easily resolved when I updated the app using the native App Store—Netflix is not available on the Google Play. The app, however, can only be used using the remote control’s mouse mode.

THE PORTS

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector Ports
BACK PORTS ON THE FLOAT EVO

There are three ports, an IR sensor, and an AC power plug located at the back of the LUMOS FLOAT EVO. The ports include a USB-A port, which you can use to plug a thumb drive, a 3.5mm auxiliary port for headphones and speakers, and an HDMI port for laptops.

BLUETOOTH CONNECTION

USING THE BLUETOOTH ON THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO

The FLOAT EVO utilizes a Bluetooth 5.0 connection. While it’s one of the latest Bluetooth versions, it still has a bit of latency or sound delay when connected to speakers and headphones. This, nevertheless, can easily be corrected using media players like VLC Player—which I also highly recommend versus the stock video player app.

SOUND QUALITY

REWATCHING EVANGELION ON THE LUMOS FLOAT EVO

The LUMOS FLOAT EVO sports two 4Ω 5W speakers located on the left and right sides of the unit. This is more powerful than the 4Ω 3W speaker used on the original LUMOS FLOAT, and it’s easily discernible—the sound coming from the EVO is noticeably louder and more balanced.

Still, since the unit is quite small, you still won’t get that home theater boom; connecting it to an external speaker is still the way to go for a full home theater experience.

PICTURE QUALITY

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector Image Quality
THE PICTURE QUALITY IS GOOD EVEN IN DURING THE DAY AND ON A GRAY WALL TOO

One of the best improvements for the LUMOS FLOAT EVO is the picture quality. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how bright it was. With a brightness of 4500 lumens, it is good enough for daytime use—something its predecessor can’t do. It is, I believe, as bright as the LUMOS DAYSTAR.

And with a native 1080p resolution—it can also support 4k videos, downsizing it to 1080p—picture quality is very sharp and vibrant, even during daytime and even on our gray wall—we really have to get a pull-down projector screen, lol.

With that, my wife—who’s also a teacher when not travel blogging—would probably be bringing this to school with her to use as a teaching aid.

IMPROVEMENTS & WISHLIST

Again, I have nothing but high praises for the LUMOS FLOAT EVO. The only thing I don’t like about it is its cluttered interface.

I was able to customize the original LUMOS FLOAT interface permanently, so I hope LUMOS could also do this for the FLOAT EVO for people who like a simpler interface.

AFTER-SALES SUPPORT

The LUMOS FLOAT EVO has a full one-year warranty from the date of purchase. And one good thing about LUMOS is that they actually have local support in the Philippines. You may contact them at support@lumosprojector.ph or through FB Messenger via the LUMOS Facebook Page.

FINAL THOUGHTS

LUMOS FLOAT EVO Smart Projector 1st Gen & 2nd Gen
GEN 1 AND GEN 2 LUMOS FLOATS

LUMOS has combined the versatility of the LUMOS FLOAT and the brightness and clarity of the LUMOS DAYSTAR into one package, the LUMOS FLOAT EVO. It is easy to operate, easy on the eyes, and easy to store—which is also an important aspect of having a home theater without permanent placement. A worthy upgrade from the original LUMOS FLOAT, the FLOAT EVO home theater projector simply gives me joy.
