PANGASINAN | Underwater at Dasol’s Tambobong Beach

Saturday, April 21, 2012

The warm water enveloped my body as I dived into the calm turquoise water of Tambobong Beach. From the images I saw at Google Maps, Dasol Bay looks quite promising for underwater fun; it was spotted with different shades of green, indicating a rich a marine environment.
The clarity of Tambobong’s water is excellent as I swam my way from the shore to its deeper regions. It took me a while though as the seabed has a very gradual slope. I got pretty far, having no fear of being dragged by the current, the water being as calm as it was.

The cove’s underwater life is indeed quite healthy. Sea grass and flowers are blooming profusely under its green surface with a few colorful corals every now and then.
I understand that this is a fishing village and I know that Dasol is no Coron but I was a bit disappointed with the number of fishes I saw as I snorkel even in its deeper parts. There are colorful fishes, yes; but not in multitudes like most snorkeling sites in the country. The fishes here are naturally afraid of people and quickly hide whenever I get too close.
Still, I guess the fisherfolks of Tambobong must be practicing correct fishing methods as small fishes still thrive here, replenishing the bounty most people around the cove live on.
Aside from the vibrant fishes, I also saw quite a few sea slugs and starfishes on the sea bottom. There were also rare encounters with eels (or were those seasnakes?) and apple-sized jellyfishes.
One interesting feature of Tambobong’s water can be found on its eastern end where saltwater mixes with freshwater that seeps out from the jagged stones along its bank. Here the water shifts from warm to cold and clear to filmy in matter of seconds. It’s an eerie experience especially if you’re swimming alone.
Considering that Tambobong Beach is really not a tourist destination and most especially it being a fishing village; I still got to enjoy gliding over its calm green waters. The fishes may be few and the corals may not be as abundant as those in Coron and Balicasag but its wild underwater garden was enough for me.

  3. love the shots... I know Tambobong is not really a tourist beach as it is really a fishing village but it slowly grows to become a destination to see in Pangasinan. Did you visit Colibra Island too?

  5. the area around Tambobong would need a lot of time before it can bounce back. Locals used to practice dynamite fishing, thats why what you see is a decimated underwater scene. there is a better snorkeling area in Balinmanok (where the shipwreck is)

Pero it's good to retain the natural beauty di ba para next time na ako naman ang pumunta diyan, makikita ko rin yung nakita mo diyan. Pak! Ang mahal lang ng trike from Burgos, sana may jeep route man lang :(

Haha not really, you can still dive even with a snorkel on; just be sure to have enough air when you go back up para may pwersa ka pa to blow the water out of your snorkel :)

  13. Hehe, explain talaga. Kasi ako, pag nag snorkeling at nag enjoy, I tend to forget na lumulubog na ko ng husto kaya naiinum ko ang tubig dagat! ALAT. hehe

Bili ka nung snorkel na may blowhole (di ko sure kung yun tawag dun hehe) sa bibig, mas madali gamitin yun lalo na pag sumisisid ka or yun nga pag napasukan ng tubig.

Yung gamit ko na snorkel (been with me for years now, Topis ang tatak. Okay sya, di pinapasukan ng tubig, saka madali i-clear yung tubig sa tube pag sumisisid :)
