LUMOS FLOAT Review

LUMOS, a Singapore-based brand, has released a new version of their best-selling LUMOS home cinema projector, the LUMOS FLOAT. It comes three years after the original affordable home projector hit the market. And this new iteration is sexier—lighter, slimmer, more versatile, and even comes in three colors. Let’s see if it still retains the quality of the original in its new package.

LUMOS FLOAT SPECS & PRICING

LUMOS FLOAT Silver
WHAT’S INSIDE THIS HANDSOME PROJECTOR?

The LUMOS FLOAT comes in two versions, the FLOAT Smart (₱7,999.00) and FLOAT Regular (₱4,999.00). The main difference between the two is the lack of a full Android OS on the Regular. That means that if you want to watch something using the Regular, you’d have to physically connect a USB thumb drive or your laptop to the unit. The Smart comes in three colors, gold, silver, and pink, while the Regular only comes in silver. It can be purchased directly from the LUMOS official website.

Below is the full specification and comparison of the LUMOS FLOAT Smart and Regular.

MOVIE SESSION: THE LUMOS FLOAT HOME THEATER EXPERIENCE

LUMOS FLOAT Movie Session
READYING FOR OUR FRIYAY MOVIE NIGHT

We tested the LUMOS FLOAT Smart on our usual Friyay Session at home and found it to be fun and easy to use.

THE BUILD

LUMOS FLOAT Front
LUMOS FLOAT BUILD QUALITY

Upon initial inspection, I found the build to be a bit plasticky but still sturdy enough for daily use—well, you’re probably not gonna be moving it that much. We have the silver version, and I like how compact and sleek it looks. Compared to the LUMOS RAY, this is really tiny. If you’re not gonna mount it permanently, it is quite easy to store and retrieve for a viewing session.

I’m definitely loving the 360-degree adjustable metal brace, which was one of the things I wish the original LUMOS RAY had—finally, no need to stuff random things on the bottom to correctly angle and raise the projection. It’s so versatile you can even project it on your ceiling and watch while lying on your bed.

The brace, which can be attached to a wall or even your ceiling, can be tightened for a permanent angle by adjusting the screws on both sides using the provided Allen wrench. It felt sturdy enough to sufficiently hold the unit without fear of breaking.

TURNING IT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME

TURNING ON LUMOS FLOAT FOR THE FIRST TIME

Upon turning it on, the projection will naturally appear blurry, and you have to adjust the focus using the remote control’s F+ and F- buttons. Once it comes into focus, you’ll then need to manually adjust the position of the actual unit, then fine-tune it using the Projection settings to make every side fully horizontal and vertical.

The next step was to connect to the Wi-fi, which was easy and painless.

It has a manual setting, in which you can input the time and date yourself, or you can set it on Automatic Date & Time, which lets the Internet correct it. In my case, it took a bit of time to sync (probably due to my Internet connection), so I resorted to manually setting it. I tried closing and turning the unit back on—to see if it would retain the dates—but it reverted back to the incorrect default date. In the end, I just set it to Automatic Date & Time and simply waited for it to correct itself.

With all this, I got a feel for how the remote control worked, and I liked how light, easy, intuitive, and responsive it was.

THE INTERFACE

LUMOS FLOAT Home Tab
THE LUMOS FLOAT HOME TAB

The LUMOS FLOAT Smart has an Android 9 OS with a Whale TV launcher. The interface is divided into six tab categories—Search, Home, Apps, Video, Music, and Settings.

The SEARCH tab is for searching anything on YouTube. HOME lists down popular TV apps, plus those that you recently used. APPS has all the popular apps, and if you click the last arrow, all the apps installed on the device. VIDEO has categories you can choose that search through YouTube once you click them. Similarly, the MUSIC tab also performs this way, and also on YouTube. And finally, the SETTINGS is naturally where all the settings are.

All these, beside the Settings tab, have huge flashy carousel splash screens at the top, which you cannot change or turn off. Although I can see how this kind of layout may appeal to people, with everything being within a few clicks, I personally found the interface to be too cluttered and redundant. I like simple layouts, similar to what the original LUMOS RAY has.

To remedy this, I downloaded a custom launcher to modify the look and feel of my LUMOS FLOAT’s interface. I used the pre-installed Google Play Store to install Projectivity Launcher, and voila, a clean and streamlined interface! Now, let’s start watching.

TV APPS

LUMOS FLOAT Music Tab
THE MUSIC TAB

The LUMOS FLOAT Smart comes with pre-installed streaming apps—popular ones like YouTube and Netflix, and regional ones like MastroTV and aDrama for Chinese viewers. A few of the other apps, like Disney+, Facebook, or Spotify, you’d have to install yourself, which was easy enough. Just press, say, the Spotify button, and it takes you to the installation page.

LUMOS FLOAT Netflix Troubleshooting
USING NETFLIX ON THE LUMOS FLOAT

Most of the apps I tried worked flawlessly except Netflix. I can’t seem to make it respond using the remote control. I updated the app using the built-in App Store—not Google’s; it’s not available there—but it’s still not working. It turns out, the solution to make Netflix work on LUMOS FLOAT was to turn on the mouse mode on the remote control and use the mouse pointer to navigate through the Netflix screen. From there on, it worked without a hitch.

THE PORTS

LUMOS FLOAT Back Portion
THE PORTS ARE FOUND ON THE BACK OF LUMOS FLOAT

I also tinkered with the media ports on the LUMOS FLOAT, which are conveniently located at the back. It has four ports—an AV (for external speakers), USB, HDMI, a headphone slot, and an IR receiver (not really a port, for the remote).

The USB drive worked well, immediately popping up a window as I inserted it. The built-in media player was able to play MP4 and MKV videos popularly encoded in H264 and H265 codecs. I tried less popular codecs like AV1, and expectedly, wasn’t able to play it.

I installed VLC and MX Player from the Google Play Store, but it still won’t play. I later uninstalled VLC but retained MX Player, as I found it to be easier to use than the stock media player. Plus, it has an Audio Delay function, which is useful for Bluetooth latency issues.

SOUND QUALITY

SPEAKER GRILLS ON THE SIDE OF THE LUMOS FLOAT

LUMOS FLOAT has the same two 3W speakers (4Ω3W x 2) that the LUMOS RAY has, so I was expecting decent sound from it. The FLOAT, however, has a tinier sound compared to its predecessor, most probably due to its smaller build. It is, nevertheless, still pretty decent—especially in a quiet room.

In a room with a lot of ambient noise, I had to turn the volume up to 30 to 40 to audibly understand a vlog on YouTube, and a volume setting of 100 still felt low. In a quiet room, a setting of 10 is enough to hear the same vlog audibly, and 100 feels very loud.

One thing I noticed is that the spatial sound leans more to the right. While the unit actually has two separate speakers for a stereo effect—one each for the left and right channels—the back design, which has grills where most of the sounds come out of, has the left and middle ones closed off, making the rightmost grill the only way for the sound to come out of. Granted there are also speaker grills off the sides, but those seemed too small to make a difference.

For casual users, the sound is indeed good enough, better than the ones coming out of your flatscreen TVs. But, for a chest-thumping cinema-like experience, it’s still best to connect the LUMOS FLOAT to a dedicated speaker system, either via a wired system or through a Bluetooth connection. And with that, I tried connecting the LUMOS FLOAT to my 12-watt TriBit MaxSound Plus, a mid-range Bluetooth speaker, and finally got that oomph I was looking for.

BLUETOOTH CONNECTION

LUMOS FLOAT Bluetooth Capabilities
CONNECTING TO THE LUMOS VIA BLUETOOTH

Connecting devices to the LUMOS FLOAT is possible using its Bluetooth 4.0 capability. As mentioned above, I connected my speaker using this connection without any trouble.

I did experience a bit of a hitch when connecting my Marshall Major headphones. It can find the device but simply won’t connect. A simple restart fixed the issue. The headphones worked.

I also tried to connect another pair of Bluetooth headphones, a Kenwood, to see if the LUMOS FLOAT can handle two headphones at once, which is perfect for watching late-night movies together with my wife without waking our son. It does connect simultaneously, but only one pair of headphones works.

If you experience audio latency, or delayed audio for regular-people speak—which is quite common when using Bluetooth—it can be overcome by using third-party apps.

PICTURE QUALITY

LUMOS FLOAT Review
CRISP AND VIBRANT PROJECTION FROM THE LUMOS FLOAT

And finally, the LUMOS FLOAT’s picture quality.

I was actually blown away at how huge its projection was on our wall compared to the LUMOS RAY with the same unit-to-wall distance ratio. I’d say it’s about 20 to 30 percent larger. With a brightness of 3,000 lumens and a maximum projection size of 150 inches, the videos are crisp and the colors are vibrant, especially if the room is fully dark. It is worth noting that I am projecting this on a gray wall, so you can just imagine how brighter the picture would be if it’s projected on a white one.

I also tested it during the daytime, and it’s surprisingly viewable, though with lesser clarity, of course.

LUMOS FLOAT Watching During The Day
KID A, WATCHING TOTORO DURING A STORMY DAY

The projector has a native resolution of 720p, and their website says it can support up to 1080p. I tried playing videos with these resolutions, and they’re really quite good. I also tried a lesser resolution of 480p, and even with its massive screen size, it’s still pretty decent.

IMPROVEMENTS & WISHLIST

LUMOS FLOAT Versus LUMOS RAY
THE LUMOS FLOAT ALONGSIDE LUMOS RAY

There’s not much to dislike about the LUMOS FLOAT. The only thing I could think of would be a much sturdier material for the body—but that’s not really saying that it’s flimsy at all—and it would probably weigh down the unit, which would defeat its FLOAT moniker. I just liked how solid the LUMOS RAY felt compared to the FLOAT.

The interface could also definitely get a much-needed facelift. I prefer a smoother, more efficient, and less cluttered look. Or even maybe just the option of being able to customize it without the need for a third-party launcher.

FINAL THOUGHTS

LUMOS FLOAT Review
HAPPY WITH THE LUMOS FLOAT

I find joy in using the LUMOS FLOAT; it’s small and light enough to use frequently even without mounting. And if you ever mount it, as it was intended, then it becomes even more convenient, as you can easily swivel it around 360 degrees. I love how responsive it was. And finally, its massive projection size—even at such a small distance—and crisp and vibrant picture quality are definitely impressive. With its price, I recommend this for those who want to simulate a cinema-like experience inside their homes without siphoning off their life savings and having their wife divorce them.
