YEAR ENDER | Fifteen for Twenty Fifteen | Lakad Pilipinas

The year that was—thirteen Philippine provinces, thirteen hotel staycations, seven countries and absolutely no itineraries.

Ah 2015. The year has been a rollercoaster ride. There are months where I was on the road everyday and there are some where I was almost absolutely at home. It was so unlike the previous years where I have multiple trips every month. But still, it is one of my most memorable travel years, having finally undertaken my longest trip so far—two months across South East Asia. I never even dreamed of going that far and that long when I started traveling six years back.

I’m actually unsure if I could top that this coming 2016. But heck, at my age, I don’t give a flying duck anymore about topping myself. I just want to go; relax on beaches, get lost on city alleys, hop across islands and get absolutely drunk during staycations with the usual gang (which by the way turns out to be one of the best group of friends I can probably find that shares one common interest, Red Horse Beer travelling).

Try as I may, it is impossibly too hard to bring each and every experience I had this year on this blog. No doubt, in due time, I would be able to tell all those tales. But in the meantime, my cameraphone and Instagram has been my constant companion throughout every trip—it is more updated than my messages to my mom on my current whereabouts.

It is only fitting that I present my fifteen best moments of my twenty fifteen on IG.

And as always, they’re squared, filtered and lo-fi.

16. QUIAPO, MANILA

QUIAPO? YES, QUIAPO. BECAUSE IT’S THE PEOPLE YOU’RE WITH MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

Your fate, on their hands

15. PILILIA, RIZAL

BECAUSE SUDDENLY, YOU’RE NOT IN YOUR ROOM ANYMORE.

One moment I was sitting with my laptop at home, the next, I was shooting the sunset at Rizal.

14. TAGAYTAY CITY, CAVITE

11. BALI, INDONESIA

FIRST TIME IN BALI.
I’M NOT HERE FOR THE BEACH. I’M HERE FOR THE CULTURE. HAH.

10. MARINDUQUE

BECAUSE BEING STRANDED ON AN ISLAND PARADISE FOR A FEW DAYS ISN’T THAT BAD.
EXCEPT WHEN YOU HAVE NO MORE MONEY TO BUY FOOD, THAT IS.

Journey's End

9. VANG VIENG, LAOS

OH YEAH, WE DID VISIT SOME TOURIST SPOTS TOO.

8. PAI, THAILAND

WE MOTORBIKED. WE ATE. WE DRANK.
LIKE THERE WAS NO TOMORROW.
AND IT WAS STILL CHEAPER THAN A DAY IN BANGKOK.

7. BORACAY ISLAND, AKLAN

WHEN YOU START TO ACCEPT THAT BORACAY IS REALLY NOT THE SECLUDED BEACH EVERYONE STILL WISHED IT TO BE.

6. ROMBLON ISLAND, ROMBLON

WHEN ALMOST EVERYONE IN TOWN ALREADY KNOWS YOUR FACE AND BADES YOU FAREWELL WHEN YOU LEAVE.

5. MACAU, CHINA

WE DIDN’T EVEN ENTER ANY BAR. WE BOUGHT CANS FROM CONVENIENCE STORES,
HEADED STRAIGHT TO THE UNESCO SITES AND FINISHED EVERYTHING THERE UNTIL THE WEE HOURS OF THE MORNING.
LOVELY PLACE TOO, BY THE WAY.

Unexpectedly organic; I thought Macau was all about modern buildings and glitzy casinos

4. HONG KONG

GOT MESMERIZED AS I PASSED IT ABOARD A CRUISE SHIP. WENT BACK THE NEXT WEEK AND WAS EVEN MORE IMPRESSED.
NEXT TIME, I PROMISE I’LL VISIT THEM TOURIST SPOTS.

3. MANDALAY TO BAGAN, MYANMAR

NO OTHER OPTION OTHER THAN THE 10-HOUR SLOW-TRAIN RIDE ACROSS MYANMAR.
BUT IF GIVEN A CHOICE NEXT TIME, I’D STILL GO FOR THIS ONE.

2. BAGAN, MYANMAR

SURPRISE! I STILL KNOW HOW TO BIKE! TEMPLE RAN THE THOUSAND PAGODAS ON TWO SHAKY WHEELS.

Relearned to ride a bike in Bagan. Visited six temples on two wheels.

1. PAKSE, LAOS

BECAUSE TREE TOP LAOS IS THE HARDEST THING I EVER DID IN MY WHOLE LIFE.
THE VIEW, ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT. THE PLACE, PERFECT TEN.
BUT F**K THIS S**T.
I. WILL. NOT. DO. THIS. AGAIN. EVER.

The hardest trek I've done. Since birth!
