SIQUIJOR | Capilay’s Spring Park at San Juan

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

The town of San Juan in Siquijor is known for its fine beaches. But in its center is a public park that might go unnoticed for tourists visiting the area if not for it being part of the guided tour in the island.

A wooden sign that read “Welcome to Capilay’s Spring Park” greeted us as we alighted from Kuya Joam’s tricycle. It was a hot afternoon and the acacia-laden park seemed deserted save for us.

The spring park is made up of one very long natural pool that has been concreted by the locals and turned into a public plaza of sorts. The green pool has three chambers; the spring area, the swimming and the laundry pool. The flowing water eventually spills out into the nearby bay of San Juan.

I asked our guide if I can swim in its water and he said that locals do swim in the pool all the time. The water looked too deep though and even our guide’s unsure of its depth. I wandered a bit along its bank and found some swimmers along its deep green waters; tilapia fishes!

A few huts and benches sit along the other side of the spring. I bet these are favorite hangout for the locals on weekends, after school and work hours on weekdays.

I read somewhere that there’s a church on a hill that overlooks the whole park but I really wasn’t able find it.

Capilay’s Spring Park may not look much for visitors touring Siquijor and it did leave that impression on me. There really was nothing much going on for this part of the tour, there’s a pool and there are benches and pavilions covered by trees and that’s it. But I bet the locals of San Juan love this area as much as Baguio peeps love Burnham Park. This is the kind of place that creates lasting memories for kids and teenagers living in a small town.
